First time we've raced this event, though it is in our back yard. Falling on the 4th of July weekend, it was difficult to field a team, but locals Jason Mogensen, Tim Webster and Barry Brown showed the stripes. Paul Low was dying to do the Mill Mountain Hill Climb, and raced both crits as well (not Paul's favorite format) to compete in the omnium.
Mill Mountain hill climb was first on the menu and Paul finished the 1.87 miles in 9:44, which was good enough for second place in the 3/4's and put him in the top 5 overall. It was great to see our friends Dan Netzer and Frank Cundiff from Celerity Cycling, who were both signed up for the 3/4 and 1/2/3 events and therefore raced six times over the weekend.
The Sunday crit was pancake flat and Paul fell behind the peloton, but finished the race. Before Paul's race was the Category 5 event. New team mates Tim Webster and Barry Brown gave it their best in their second road event, but a former member of the team, Whit Zirkle, took first place for the CBC team out of Charlottesville.
The Monday crit was on the Roanoke Twilight course with a little extra block added. First up for us was the 5's. Barry and Tim had dramatically improved since the day before, and Barry Brown took third in the crit. Paul had improved his performance. On the last lap, he was in 6th place after falling off the back and catching back up to the peloton. The sprint on the last lap was too fast and he finished at the back of the peloton. Still, he managed 6th place in the omnium and walked away with a little cash
